How to let people contact you without giving out your phone number
· by the TAP IN HERE team
Putting your personal number on a poster, a delivery box or a public profile invites spam calls and messages you never asked for. But hiding it completely means losing the people who genuinely want to reach you. There is a middle path.
1. Use a message form instead of a number
A contact form lets anyone send you a message while your number and email stay hidden. On a TAP IN HERE profile, visitors can use Send a message; it lands in your enquiry inbox, and you choose whether and how to reply. A bot check stops automated spam before it reaches you.
2. Share an anonymous chat link
Sometimes you do not want to reveal even who is behind a link — a QR code on a parked car, a lost-and-found tag, a feedback box at a counter. An Anonymous Chat link opens a message form directly. It never shows your profile, name or username; the message simply arrives in your inbox.
3. Separate your business number from your personal one
If you do want calls, use a dedicated number for work. Your profile can list a different WhatsApp number from your calling number, so a business line can take WhatsApp enquiries while your personal number stays private.
4. Let people ask publicly, answer privately
On the Requests board, people post what they need in public. Responses to a request are private between the two people involved, so nobody's contact details are exposed to everyone reading the board.
5. Decide what stays off the page
Your login email is never shown on your public profile — you choose a separate public contact address, or none at all. You can also stay out of Discover and keep your page reachable only by your own link or QR code.
Put it together
A sensible setup for most people: a public profile with a message button, a business WhatsApp number if you want chats, and your personal number nowhere public. Share one link, and let people reach you on your terms.
